Book Covers Ready to be Glazed!
Here are some book covers I have been working on. I just need to glaze, fire and ship to Jessica to be bound into beautiful books!

FOUR GOALS BEFORE 2013 IS OVER
Elsie at a beauitful mess has challenged her readers to come up with 4 simple goals to accomplish before 2013. Here is a go at my goals!
My second goal is to experiment with more glaze combination. Again, I know what works and I know what I like on my ceramic pieces. Who's to say there are not more beauitful glaze combinations that I have not tried yet. I always get inspired when teaching kids glazing, because they love suprises and try new things without fear. I hestitate and fall back to the classics. My reward will be the excitement of having a new glaze for my body of work.
My third goal is to expand my knowledge of new ceramic artists. I always choose to create, instead of evaluating other artists in my field. Evaulating other artists can help me become the ceramic artist I want to be. It is just as important as creating ceramics. My reward will be a new book on a ceramic artist.
My fourth goal will be to work in the style of an artist. After reading up on ceramic artists, I would like to take on the challenge of working in their style. This will help me refine my skills as a potter and force myself to just play with clay. Sometimes I get into the rhythm of work, work, work and no playing. My reward will be to purchase a new piece of pottery from an artist I like.

My first goal is to try a new technique in clay. I get stuck in a rut of making the same form over and over. I love making bowls and mugs and I know my clients love them too. I have always wanted to make the casserole form. Here is my opportunity to do so. My reward will be to find a yummy recipe to cook in my new cassorole dish.

Ceramic Book Covers
Jessica and I decided to do a group project. I made ceramic book covers.
First, I rolled out a slab of clay. Next, I picked which stamps I wanted for the front and back of the cover.
I decided to do the same stamps on the front and back. Next, the flat rectangle pieces were fired in the kiln.
Lastly, I picked glazes that I felt best matched the design on the clay. Now it is Jessica's turn to see if she can bind some paper in between the covers. The books might be super heavy but it is a experiment we are willing to try. Can't wait to see how they turn out Jessica. They are in the mail.

Glaze Day

Glaze day starts with me waxing the bottom of all my pieces and cleaning off any dirt. The wax burns off in the kiln. The ceramic piece cannot have glaze on the bottom or it will stick to the kiln shelf. Glaze turns to glass and it sticks to the kiln shelf. Next, I check out the glaze chart to decide what colors I want to use.
When glaze is fired it changes color in the kiln. Next, it is loaded in the kiln and preheated for 8 hours. Next, it is fired for 8 hours. It is brought to about 2300 degrees. It cools for 24 hours and then that's when "Christmas" happens. Sometimes as a ceramic artist you are pleasantly surprised with the results of the glaze firing or sometimes you get what you don't want. You never know what people are going to like though so it is good to get other opinions before you get rid of the piece. One man's trash is another man's treasure. Sarah
